Verify the basics — every time

• A valid business number and WSIB coverage in Ontario.
• Liability insurance you can see, not just hear about.
• Trade licences where the work requires them (electrical, gas, plumbing).
• Real, recent project proof — photos and references you can actually reach.

Ask the questions that reveal how they work

• Who’s on site day to day — the person quoting, or a crew you haven’t met?
• How do they handle change orders and surprises behind the walls?
• What does the payment schedule look like? (Large deposits are a flag.)
• What’s the warranty, in writing?

Trust the paper, not the pitch

A detailed written scope and a clear schedule tell you more than the smoothest sales conversation. If a quote is a single line and a number, ask for the breakdown.
